When I first heard about this story, it sounded like an episode of Keystone Cops or something, just the rampant incompetence of the officers involved...! I mean, how do you let things get so out of control over somebody jumping a turnstile, to end up with tasers deployed, and two innocent bystanders shot, one in the head, not to mention another police officer also shot by his own peers! I mean, that's like getting all mixed up and scoring on your own net!
I love the way you break it down and show how this type of policing actually ends up with worse outcomes, and costs way more money than de-escalation would have. I really like the term "Ego Driven Policing" and hope it sticks around, because it's a very effective term to show just how much of a power trip many cops are actually on. It is our job to call attention to misuses of power, and if the police aren't doing what they're supposed to be doing (i.e. serving and protecting) then why should we support them? Especially in typically disenfranchised black and brown communities, where "Serve & Protect" is little more than a joke.
Thanks for spelling it out like this! Great writing as usual!
I saw on social media that nypd shot four people because someone jumped a turnstile. Thank you for this breakdown; I think the concept of ego-driven policing is very helpful to public consciousness.
