I am a Black woman, a defense attorney, and an abolitionist. Those things don’t conflict, but during the trial against Tory Lanez, as someone who was not rooting for him, people assumed they must. Believe it or not, everything that’s unfolded since Tory Lanez shot Meg thee Stallion makes a case for abolition and illustrates how our criminal system serves as an impediment to preventing harm.
I’m so grateful to exist in a space where I can read such nuanced and insightful discourse on a complicated (yet somehow not) matter. This was shared with many people in my circle as a way to enlighten them to what I’ve been trying to express for the past two years. No, I didn’t want him to go to jail. HELL YES, I celebrated when the verdict was guilty. And these are all the reasons why those two things don’t have to be in conflict. Thank you for this!
