I can still hear my grandmother’s feet coming around the corner to my room and feel the wrinkled confusion on my fifteen-year-old face as I opened my bedroom door to her crying face.
This was a wonderful piece. Really beautiful and it gives me hope. Thank you for it. Here’s where I go for more hope:
1) I start each day with Heather Cox Richardson’s substack, Letters from an American. Using history as her anchor, she shows us that we’ve been here before (even the extremities of the anti-democracy GOP) and yet we’ve come through to the other side.
2) I take care to notice the beauty that is still all around me in the here and now.
3) Every day I try to tell someone how extraordinary they are. It’s amazing how much hope I find in recognizing someone else’s beauty.
You’ve consistently added more bass to our beating drums. Your appraisal of America is necessary in the revolution for evolution. Our past cannot remain our future, could it? It has thus far, which is why it is so stifling on one hand yet reactionary on the other hand to some. Most however are stuck in the middle where hope remains their refuge, because they simply desire peace.
When the middle learn that peace is taken, hope looks different. Thank you for always being true to yourself. You’ve taken your peace as should more Black people.
